Cypripedium

Some of the most beautiful Orchids but not the easiest. They are not recommended for beginners but they are not impossible, especially the garden hybrids. We guarantee the safe arrival of healthy plants, however after that it is up to you.

They like light or dappled shade and cool humidity. They enjoy moisture at the roots but are NOT, in any way, bog plants.

They appreciate open, well-drained soils, which do not dry out. Total dryness must be avoided, though they like to be a little drier in winter. All are fully hardy here.

Cypripedium resent disturbance and their roots bruise easily, so they must not be handled roughly. They must never dry out when planting, even a minute in direct sunshine can kill them months later.

Cypripedium calceolus

Cypripedium calceolus

Downy leaves up a 25cm stem topped by 1-3 flowers with deep russet-red petals around an inflated bright golden-yellow lip. The most exquisite of the lady-slipper orchids.

Best in a very well drained, open compost in light shade, lime is beneficial but NOT essential. (The scientific name is nothing to do with limestone, it means "little shoe").

The rewards of correct cultivation are tremendous. Superb plants, raised from seed of a long-cultivated European mainland stock. Totally artificially-propagated (and fully licensed) stock, as you will see when you examine the pristine, white, unblemished rhizomes.

Due to CITES permit costs of approx. £60 per item imposed by the UK Government these are not available for customers in Norway, Switzerland, USA, etc.

Cypripedium californicum

Cypripedium californicum

A restricted endemic species found only in the Siskiyou mountains on the California - Oregon border region of the United States. It grows there at high altitide in wet places in bogs, marshes and roadside ditches, usually in areas that are flowing with water in June, during flowering, but less wet afterwards.

This is a wonderful lady slipper and one that we are often asked for, It has proven slow to raise from seed but once growing away it makes good plants which are very growable and not tricky, as once thought. There is no hardiness problem whatsoever with us, out plants have been frozen into the ground at -17°C and grown away beautifully afterwards.

Damp, peaty soil with good drainage and plenty of water moving through the compost.

Due to CITES permit costs of approx. £60 per item imposed by the UK Government these are not available for customers in Norway, Switzerland, USA, etc.

Cypripedium fasciolatum

Cypripedium fasciolatum

It is a particular pleasure to be able to offer this plant, as it is one of the most spectacular and largest-flowered in the whole genus.

Broad, ribbed leaves are topped by a flower which has a huge white or cream, sac-shaped lip, thinly edged with just enough burgundy lines to pick out the contrast. The lip is surrounded by tepals of light olive themselves striped and flecked with the same burgundy. There is variability both in the white-cream of the lip and in the tepal colour and veining intensity, but frankly none are bad.

This is a strong-growing species but slow to come on from seed, so that these, flowered, plants, at the same age as other species which have flowered, still look smaller. However it is a wonderful listing of plants raised in cultivation, from seed, totally legal and with no taint whatsoever of 'smuggled' about them.

Cypripedium Gabriela

Cypripedium Gabriela

(kentuckiense x fasciolatum)

Registered by Werner Frosch only in 2003 this is a hybrid with immense potential as it combines the two largest flowered species in the genus and they have a wonderful sympathetic colouring as well.

Both parents have large white or cream lips, and these combine their shapes to give a flask shaped creamy yellow lip which infuses to deeper yellow at the base. Both have long, large tepals of reddish-brown colourings. The kentuckiense used for the cross was a nice dark, well-coloured one, the fasciolatum was chosen for its splendid, long, dark sepals with plenty of maroon. The hybrid is half way between, lending a rich and sympathetic colour.

Vigorous and very hardy this has a bright future ahead of it. Cultivation is 'standard' with no foibles or quirks.

Cypripedium hotei-atsumorianum

Cypripedium hotei-atsumorianum

A superb form with large, well-marked flowers of intense colouring. In ours the flowers are inclined to violet more than red. The lines on the petals and lip are well defined. The petals are paler at the base where they surround a white staminode.

The Japanese name refers to Hotei, one of seven happiness gods in Japan (Shichi-fuku-jin). One of these, Hotei has a beer belly, the symbol of wealth, and so relates to the shape of the Cypripedium lip. A very attractive plant indeed.

Cypripedium Inge

Cypripedium Inge

(parviflorum x fasciolatum)

A wonderful cross, bringing together the huge flowers and large lip (the size of a hen's egg) of fasciolatum with all of the merits of parviflorum, which makes such a good and vigorous parent. In addition there are the rich colourings and perfume of parviflorum to anticipate in the offspring.

Registered by the cultivator: W. Frosch in 2003. This is a hardy (-13°F -25°C) terrestrial orchid for the garden, 30-50 cm tall, vigorous and readily grown.

Cypripedium kentuckiense

Cypripedium kentuckiense

It is a particular delight to be able to offer this excellent plant as it is the best of all of the species from the USA.

This has very tall stems and a huge flower composed of a fat white or pale yellow lip surrounded by broad, but elongated, tepals which vary from a dark sienna through to a warm red-brown. In all of its slightly differing colour forms it is superb, with large flowers and a willingness to grow.

This does well in a well-drained, even sandy, soil (not fine dune sand but rather a river type sand) with low humus levels but some surface leaf litter.

An excellent plant but this still scarce and is never a cheap species. These are top quality, certified plants totally artificially propagated.

Cypripedium Kristi Lynn

Cypripedium Kristi Lynn

(pubescens x henryi)

A superb cross combining two very growable, yellow-lipped species made by Paul Keisling and registered in 2003.

This has a large, pure, chrome-yellow lip and yellow tepals, lined and spickled with a touch of russet. The flowers are of a good size, derived from the pubescens parent, whilst the multi-flowered henryi habit manifests in larger plants.

A good hybrid for the open garden making a splendid display.

Cypripedium macranthos

Cypripedium macranthos

A much esteemed species with broad, slightly glandular leaves and a rounded flower with a globular lip and broad tepals.

The flower is rich burgundy red, an effect created by the overlay of fine rosy-purple lines on a pale background. The effect is superb.

I have found this a good clumper, given time, since like most Cypripedium, it does not like to be disturbed too often. A sandy soil (river sand not fine dune sand) with some humus is good, top dressed with leaf litter for preference.

Vigorous, seed-raised plants produced and propagated in cultivation from start to finish.

Cypripedium Memoria Gerd Kohls

Cypripedium Memoria Gerd Kohls

(calceolus x henryi)

This combines the excellent colouring of the European ladyslipper, with its bright chrome-yellow lip and burgundy tepals, with the henryi trait of bearing several smaller flowers to each stem. The combination is enhanced by the sympathetic henryi colouring of greenish-yellow tepals and a yellow lip.

A very growable hybrid for the garden making good flowers (intermediate in size between the parents) and good increase after settling in.

Commemorates the late German orchid expert after whom Pleione kohlsii is also named.

Cypripedium Michael

Cypripedium Michael

(macranthos x henryi)

A cross between the richly coloured macranthos and the multi-flowered and eminently ‘growable’ henryi.

Stems from 25-55cm tall carry one, sometimes more, flowers which vary from deep cherry red to a paler ground colour with a darker apex. The paler forms have had superbly marked petals. This seems to be a very hardy cross having taken -13°F (-25C) in continental Europe and it will, in time, become a very valuable new addition to the range of garden hybrids.

Cypripedium montanum x reginae

Cypripedium montanum x reginae

A very "wide" cross, in that the parents are really very different from each other, in every way imaginable - as those who know the genus will realise. This is however a gem which has acquired the best traits of both parents.

The hybrid has medium-sized blooms with a multi-flowered habit of one to three flowers per stem (from montanum). This has combined with the pink colouration of reginae, whilst losing most of the brown colouration of the tepals of montanum to give lovely rose-pink, slightly-nodding flowers. These are held on slightly downy stems.

Despite the differences between the parent, their children are entrancing and this really is something totally distinct and lovely.

Due to permit costs of approx. £60 per item imposed by the UK Government these are not available for customers in Norway, Switzerland, USA, etc.

Cypripedium montanum x reginae XLcypmonregXL £42.50

Cypripedium parviflorum

Cypripedium parviflorum

This is propagated from a geographical form from the northern end of the range of the species.

It has smaller growths than the more southerly forms, each with up to three, smaller, highly fragrant flowers of a deeper and richer colouring. This is a pure deep chrome yellow lip and mahogany, twisted, curling petals. This is true, distinctive pure parviflorum - one of the best forms of it that there is.

An excellent, cold-hardy plant and a very good one for the garden where it grows, flowers and increases nicely in half shade and a well drained, humus-rich soil. A site that suits Trilliums and dwarf ferns will grow this plant well.

If comparing prices, do please allow for the superior quality of these 2 and 3 shoot plants.

Cypripedium Philipp

Cypripedium Philipp

(kentuckiense x macranthos)

This cross first flowered in 1996, when it was named, after his Grandson, by Werner Frosch.

This fabulous plant combines the superb poise and large size of kentuckiense with the colouring of macranthos. It has a large white lip, lined and infused pink over a white ground, and soft purple tepals. This rivals some of the tropical hybrids in size and beauty, but this is a garden, not a greenhouse, plant.

An outstanding plant, which proves very popular every year. Standard growing conditions for the genus are fine.
