A fabulous species bearing attractive leaves and stout spikes of pendant, 6 cm, tangerine flowers early in summer. These are infused with green on the outside and lined with red on the margins.
In time this can make impressive clumps from natural increase though it is slow to make any size from seed and after several years it is not much larger than a small daffodil bulb, then it suddenly starts to make size. It is summer-growing and winter-dormant and it will tolerate occasional winter water and a slight degree of neglect and still grow well. In the UK it is probably winter-hardy in a cold greenhouse, if water is kept off.
