This is a very early elwesii form, often opening in the first weeks of January, (in 2012 it opened on December 19th). It has attractive glaucous foliage and noticeably tall flower stems holding large flowers with thickly textured petals. Its sheer presence is hard to portray in a photograph, but it is big, bold, striking and strong as well as early-flowering. It is arguably our tallest and longest-lasting snowdrop.
The plant was given by Mrs Yvonne MacNamara (nee Majolier) to Richard Nutt and Chris Brickell. Plants entered cultivation separately from each source, under two different names. When compared the synonymy was realised, the history traced and ‘Mrs MacNamara‘ was retained. (Mrs MacNamara was Dylan Thomas’s mother-in-law, hence the alternative name).
Bishop, Davis and Grimshaw single this clone for special praise based on the sum of its desirable characters and describe it as ‘a cultivar without fault’.
