Maidenhair ferns are a genus of some 200 species spread across both hemispheres. The name is from the Greek, meaning “not wetting”, as the fronds shrug off water without becoming wet.

They prefer humus-rich, moist, well-drained sites, ranging from woodland soils to humus-filled cracks in rocks. Humidity is a key factor in their survival and many species are especially known for growing around waterfalls and seepage areas.

The largest number of species are found in the South American Andes but there are myriad species in Asia, with 40 species in China alone. New Zealand numbers three endemic species in the 10 recorded species which grow there.

We grow just a few, hardy species that are happy in light shade, in moisture retentive, humus-rich soils with good drainage where they are grown as companion plants for our dwarf woodland orchids. Their slender growth and non invasive habit perfectly complements those species which are set off to perfection by the delicate foliage of the ferns around.

Available for ordering from our Spring list and sometimes from very late Autumn also.
