Arisarum

Although there are but a few species in this genus, the best is the well-known ‘Mouse Plant’, the delight both of children and anyone older with a sense of humour. The ‘Friars Cowl’ (Arisarum vulgare) is another species sometimes seen. The third species A. simorrhinum is something of a rarity, found only in S. Spain, Portugal and parts of North Africa but it is perfectly growable, as are they all.

Arisarum grow from small, slender (pencil lead thin) tubers shaped like rhizomes. These are almost always in either root or shoot growth, but can be safely moved at most times when leaf growth is absent. Plant about 2cm deep in a well-drained, sunny or slightly shaded spot with humus in the soil and leave them to increase. They also do very well here under alpine glass in crowded pans, which aids flowering.
