Crinum

A widespread genus ranging across all hemispheres. We offer South African and Madagascan species, mostly arid-land species. These are NOT hardy garden species, they are totally different needing glasshouse cultivation in northern climes.

Most of ours are rare, little-known plants and have only recently become available. Without exception they are superb!

They are not difficult but they need a sharply drained soil. These are not suitable for cultivation outside in the UK no matter how mild or south-facing the site. As with many arid-land plants, flowering is controlled more by water availability than season and as such the flowering period is in the hands of the cultivator, as a guide, most flower with us in summer or late summer.

Ours are grown in 30 cm deep beds of sandy soil with little else added. They grow at a minumum of 40ºF in the winter, with powered air-circulation. This is a spartan regime, and they may well do better under more fertile conditions, however it seems to suit them well under our care!
