Cystopteris
Cystopteris is a genus of small, deciduous, perennial rock ferns known as bladder ferns or fragile ferns. They grow from small, creeping rhizomes and are found worldwide in shady, moist, temperate places. As a rule they are inhabitants of well-drained, or rocky habitats.
The “fragile” in the common name refers to the brittle, easily-broken stalks, the “bladder” refers to the covering over the sori.
In general a well-grown plant in a suitable environment will be 30-40 cm tall with leaves borne on petioles and then finely divided into smaller leaflets or toothed segments. All of the 10-15 species are very variable, both between species, and even within each species, as environmental influences can make them stunted or lush.
WE find them ideal companions for smaller woodland plants, orchids and lilies.
