Gymnocarpium

A small genus of the family Polypodiaceae comprising some 3 to 5 species found across from Northern temperate regions.

These so-called “Oak Ferns” make an ideal ground cover in moist shady beds. They have long, shallow-rooted, underground rhizomes which creep slowly to make nice colonies. These can be easily removed if not wanted in a particular spot and they are never invasive.

Without exception all species thrive in dappled shade, liking humidity and moisture coupled with good drainage. They make superb companion plants for many of our dwarf woodland species.
