Leucojum

Leucojum, the so-called Snowflakes, is a very small genus of bulbs from Europe, related to snowdrops, Galanthus. However Leucojum differ in having six, equal-sized petals each with a green apical mark. The flower stems are hollow. The genus now consists of only two species, L. vernum and L. aestivum.

The dwarf species with solid (not hollow) flower stems, narrow foliage and unmarked flowers, have been restored to their original genus, Acis (which see)

Our Leucojum are offered only during their dormant season from very later summer to autumn, when they are sent freshly-lifted and damp-packed. We do not send these dry but they are leaf-dormant.

Leucojum vernum is best grown in the garden in a damp, humus-rich soil in light shade. Leucojum are best not planted in full sun.

Available for ordering from our Autumn list only.
