Paris

There are many species of Paris besides the familiar British and European native species, Paris quadrifolia. The best species are centred on China and the Himalayas, with the exceptional, white flowered, Paris japonica being found only in Japan.

In the garden they require a deep, fertile, humus-rich yet well-drained soil in light shade. They also need a great degree of patience, as they frequently sulk when transplanted. They will often miss a season above ground while they make roots. Exceptionally they can take 3-4 years before they make sturdy foliage and flowers on a regular basis. They are plants of old, established woodlands in the wild and resent disturbance even in cultivation.

During establishment the gardener is their greatest threat, as digging them up to see why is a sure way to set them back even further.

Available for ordering from both our Autumn and Spring lists, though the species range will vary between lists.

Paris are late ripening items.
