Scilla

This is a variable hotch-potch genus of largely unrelated blue-flowered bulbous species which are included within Scilla mostly because they are small and blue flowered. A newer classification splits them into several genera, with the more closely-related species grouped together.

Speaking broadly however, Scilla is an old world genus which spreads across Europe from the westernmost occurrences in Portugal through the Middle East and Asia as far as Japan (Scilla japonica). The oddly named Scilla peruviana, commemorates ‘The Peru’, the ship by means of which plants were introduced rather than its country of origin; which is in fact Portugal.

All Scilla are bulbous plants and the species that we offer are hardy with us. They are all easily-grown species for the garden. Virtually all will be readily accommodated in a well-drained, humus-rich soil in full sun. None are fussy or difficult and few have any foibles. Where these do exist they have simple needs, such as the love of cold displayed by Scilla rosenii, which performs best of all in cold northern gardens.
