Urginea
This is a scattered genus now included within Hyacinthaceae. It forms small to large bulbs (depending on the species) which produce a tall, thin and stout flower spike, like a candelabra. From early autumn onwards (spring in some species), this produces a sequence of white, pale yellow or greenish, star-shaped flowers, over a long period.
Cultivation is not difficult in a heavy loam, potted, or planted out if the climate is suitable – some species are hardy in the UK others are tender.
Urginea contain a sticky white mucilage, used to kill rodents, they are ornamental species only. These bulbs are poisonous if ingested and the mucilage is irritant if allowed to remain on the skin.
Available for ordering from both our Autumn and Spring lists.
