Zoellnerallium

Zoellnerallium is a genus of bulbs within the Amaryllidaceae. The genus was first described in 1975 by O,. Crosa, based on just one species, Z. andinum, a second species Z. serenense was added, also by Crosa, in 2004. They are is native to South America and those that interest bulb growers are usually found in parts of Chile and Argentina with a Mediterranean type climate. Related, and perhaps more familiar, genera include Gilliesia, Ipheion, Leucocoryne and Tristagma.

We grow these as Mediterranean bulbs using stand composts and methods, such as you might employ for Crocus or Fritillaria. We do not find them difficult and though not flamboyant, they have a quiet charm all their own.
