Description

(formerly Leucojum autumnale)

A super little hardy, autumn-flowering bulb from Spain and Portugal which makes 1-3 miniature,  pink-tinged, hanging white bells, en masse, from August to October over thread-like leaves.

It makes a splendid early-autumn display in almost any sunny but well-drained soil suitable for bulb growing. It is easily pleased, difficult to kill in the correct conditions and it is a good one to start with. It can also be grown in pots under alpine glass, or potted up from the garden each year, to make a nice, early-autumn display.

This can make good increase and, with feeding, it will soon develop into a nice clump.

This is a new seed-raised strain, distinct from the widespread and largely vegetatively-propagated plant of general horticulture. This has been propagated from a large, but scattered population found in deep sand, under coastal pines, behind Roche in Cadiz province, Spain at 50m altitude. This is a true, fertile, wild-type, only slightly variable but it both sets seed well and comes along readily from this seed. It makes large bulbs in time, which appear to be less prone to splitting than some horticultural forms.
