Description
(Beni-Nadeshiko, Beninadeshiko)
(red dianthus)
The Japanese name, translates as Red Dianthus as the ends of the petals are serrated in the manner of some Dianthus. This is a semi-double flower of a delightful pale copper-colour with a central lime-0green boss, surrounded by sulphur-yellow anthers sitting on copper-red filaments. It is both softer and more pastel in its colouring than the superficially similar Hino Umi.
This clone is notably very hardy especially for a form which is such an early bloomer.
It sets no seed and although labelled often as “amurensis” this is in fact attributable to “amurensis of Horticulture”.
They are all very early-flowering plants for a damp, humus-rich but well-drained, lightly-shaded spot. Adonis seem to resent transplanting even more than most other Ranunculaceae, a family notorious for their dislike of being moved. Please be patient with them (and with us) as this is down to evolution, not the nurseryman.
