Description
These are MIXED flowering-sized (and flowered) seedlings, raised from Durban. As these are seed-raised, they cannot be called “Durban” – that name can only be applied to clonal divisions. The offspring are however very exciting and will not disappoint.
The name “Rich flowered strain” has been chosen to indicate, not only their fabulous colours, but also their floriferous nature and whilst Durban has produced up to 23 flowers so far from a large bulb, the seedlings easily produce 15 flowers at their first flowering.
Most are large, many are deep rich pink, but others are paler and some are remarkably dwarf, at least at their first flowering. They all make magnificent clusters of scented, trumpet-shaped flowers, borne naked, without the leaves, on 30-80 cm stems in September and October. Thus there is a lot more variation in height than in even normal, garden A. belladonna.
The flared flowers, vary from 10 cm long and 8 cm across the flared mouth up to considerably larger than this .
Can we stress that although I have used the word “seedlings” above, these are full-sized, flowered plants. They are variable, very variable, but they are only available as a mix. There are simply no selected forms, clones or strains available yet. We have not marked out any good/dark/pale/short/tall forms, they are totally unselected and are picked from the shelf randomly after lifting and ripening. We would like to help of course, but when we send them to you, they are dormant, so we have no way of knowing what the flowers will eventually be like. Please have a look at the gallery of some typical forms which are in the mix, there are more as well but we couldn’t get photos of every last one.
Fully cold hardy here in Wrexham and probably anywhere south of here where it will be happy against a south-facing wall with a degree of benevolent neglect. Best in a very well-drained, fertile soil in a dryish site but not difficult.
