Description

Double flowers of pure white, with a variable number of petalloid stamens in the centre, like a shuttlecock. Not all flowers are fully double when they are young or not fully established; some just have a few extra segments instead of anthers.  As a rule, even in mature, established clumps, the flowers have a ring of part formed anthers at the base of the double inner frill which lends a yellow tone to the centre.

This is a worthy garden plant, although it is sometimes wrongly equated with Vestal, which is a very different clone. Sadly lack on familiarity of the two clones means that the names are sometimes (wrongly) quoted as synonyms or used interchangeably, which is also incorrect.

Introduced in 1771.
