Description

A very striking and attractive species from Japan with just one leaf, though this is divided into a dozen or so leaflets, on its 30-40 cm tall stem.

Before this stem is fully developed the 15 cm tall spathe appears on quite a short stem below and this is a remarkable construction, even for Arisaema. It is dark purple, very dark purple in fact, folded back on itself, with white swirling around the dark like an exotic ice-cream sundae. The spadix is also purple and emerges from the mouth of the spathe and heads for the sky, pointing upwards like a 12 cm long tail.

Easy to grow and multiplies well after a few years in the ground. Half shade and a light, leafy soil is perfect but good for pot cultivation also.
