Description

This readily grown plant grows from horizontal tubers and has arrow-shaped, leaves of deep green, with a slight flecking or marbling (and sometimes veining), over their upper surface.

The spathes which are borne in May are large and are a creamy-white, easily reaching 15cm long and often even more than this, in this very large form. The top is folded over when it first opens and the spathe whorls around a deep butter yellow spadix. Deep in the inflorescence, this has bright yellow staminate flowers. Attractive orange fruits follow in the autumn if pollination is a success.

Grows well outside here in sun or light shade in a loamy soil with decent drainage. It isn’t demanding and it propagates itself slowly in one of the greenhouse beds as well as growing happily outside here. A particularly large and robust form.

Raised from plants which appeared as rogues in one of our CEH (1982) collections.
