Description
Shiny, dark green, spear-shaped leaves, which are present with the inflorescences. The leaves can have tiny deep purple-brown spickles present on them, but this feature is not universal.
The spathes are very large, deep green outside and varying from greenish-purple to purplish-brown inside, merging into a white centre. These spathes are very decorative, with strongly protruding, deep purple-brown spadices which, with time, elongate from the base and incline slightly. Importantly our plants have horizontal tubers which distinguishes this species from Arum elongatum during dormancy.
Easy in the garden, hardy and readily grown here in a leafy loam, under small orchard trees.
Raised from a collection made by the late Vladimir Vasak in Crimea in the 1980s which has persisted in the garden here, and with a friend, ever since.
