Description
One of the larger and most striking Arum that we grow and a very stately and imposing species making large attractive leaves and large spathes on stems that can reach from 25cm to some 50cm tall. These spathes are solid, deep purple-black and fold back to display a spadix of the same intense colour. This huge, black Arum is unique in being the only dark species that isn’t a stinker, as it is faintly but pleasantly scented (of roses). In this pleasant scent and in the shape of its spathes it shares features with A. creticum. Spectacular and rarely seen.
In the UK, this needs a well-drained, warm spot in full sun. The foliage is perhaps not freeze-hardy in very cold climates or severe winters, though it will take transient frosting with no damage and we have not lost plants here due to freezing, ever. If you prefer it can be grown in a greenhouse bed, though it may struggle in pots under glass in view of its size and vigour. In warmer climes it will do well outside. We grow it bedded out under frost-free glass and it grows and flowers profusely under these conditions.
