Description

(syn. Asarum memmingeri, Hexastylis virginica)

The flowers are deep brownish-red and flask shaped, with a pale edge to the mouth. Although they are borne under the leaves, you can hardly miss the clustered blooms. It delights in the common name of “Little Brown Jugs”.

The evergreen foliage is leathery, glossy, and heart shaped, each leaf 4-8cm across with the upper leaf surface silvery mottled. When bruised, the foliage, indeed the whole plant, emits a lovely scent of fresh ginger.

In time this makes a lovely compact little clump. AS well as being a good pot plant this associates really well with other plants out in the woodland garden; Anemone, hardy Ϲyclamen, Trillium and dwarf ferns.

Moist soil, preferably acidic, in shade. Tolerant, easy and hardy.
