Description
(Asarum hirsutisepalum Kinshachi)
A very robust Japanese species from Yakushima, home of so many tough, hardy garden plants.
The straight species is best described as an evergreen clumper, this has 15 cm long, thick, glossy, dark green leaves with a rubbery feel. In Kinshachi however the leaves are a startling combination of yellow and green (see gallery).
The flowers are startling and are quite large with a yellowish-buff ground covered all over with purple plush. This is flock wallpaper made floral!
We first offered Asarum yakusimense in 2015 under the synonym of Asarum hirsutisepalum, however this new stock is a clonal form, Kinshachi, of the species. This has flowers with stronger, more pronounced colours and a background which is much inclined to yellow. The flower petals are thinly edged with cream. The main picture is the of the unselected species, there are pictures of the exact clone are in the gallery.
