Description
This, and the closely related Bellevalia kurdistanica are native to some of the coldest areas of Hakkari in Turkey though B. fominii has a range extending into both Armenia and Iran.
B. fominii was named by Woronow in 1927 and it has elongated spikes of indigo-tinged, cream flowers, bearing blue anthers, each spike topped by a cone of unopened buds of bright indigo-blue. With increasing bulb age, larger and longer spikes are produced.
Very lovely and not difficult in a sunny, well-drained soil with a dry summer rest, seldom seen but this is simply because it is new and still rare.
This is raised from JJA.227.841 and this collection number is B. fominii. The species under the JJA.227.841 was originally introduced as kurdistanica, but is in fact now identified as B. fominii, (the collection number JJA.227.840 also introduced as B. kurdistanica is correctly named).
