Description

Tufted rhizomes crowded with small slender pseudobulbs make slender foliage in a small rosette. Above is a wiry flower spike holding several, good sized flowers (for a miniature species) with an intricate structure.

The petals are long and drawn out in a shade of deep mahogany with the tips, and sometimes the edges, picked out in dusky green-gold. The lip is white, cut and slashed into the shape of a little man, wearing a red helmet which is itself adorned with a golden beak.

In some plants the tip of the lip is plum coloured, in others it is white. This again is very different to the species usually encountered.

Growth should be in a rich, humus-rich soil which drains well but retains some moisture. A native of high mountain woodlands in Japan and Taiwan this wants light shade (never full sun) and it appreciates humidity. It dislikes wind and dry air.
