Description
A strong growing species from China, described by Rolfe in 1896. It makes broad, ribbed leaves, typical of the hardy Calanthe and fresh ones are made annually from fat shoots that appear in April. These contain the flower buds that slowly emerge and elongate to make tall, stout stems with a succession of good-sized flowers of burnished bronze with an elongated lip of primrose yellow. There is, as always, some colour variation around the theme.
The flowers have a not totally pleasant scent which you won’t notice too much unless you get really close and as they are large and well-coloured they can be appreciated without proximity being essential.
Easy and increases nicely, if slowly, in a well-drained but moisture retentive and humus-rich compost. Fully hardy here, it has grown outside for many years.
