Description
Calanthe Kozu hybrids combine the hardy Calanthe discolor with the highly fragrant Calanthe izu–insularis. The latter is a very rare plant (virtually rendered extinct by wild hybridisation in fact) which has the most fabulous rich red colouring.
The results of the cross have been re-selected and are magnificent plants for the garden in the UK where they reliably combine the growability of discolor with the colour and scent of izu–insularis to make strong growths and 25 cm long spikes of flowers within a basic framework of red and russet. The flower colour of the brown selections is closer to izu–insularis than to discolor.
These are colour-selected in flower. Strong, virus-free, flowering sized plants grown from flasked seedlings and grown and propagated here.
