Description
Calanthe Kozu hybrids combine the hardy Calanthe discolor with the highly fragrant Calanthe izu–insularis. The latter is a very rare plant (virtually rendered extinct by wild hybridisation in fact) which has the most fabulous rich red colouring.
The results of the cross have been re-selected and are magnificent plants for the garden in the UK where they reliably combine the growability of discolor with the colour and scent of izu–insularis to make strong growths and 25 cm long spikes of flowers within a basic framework of red and russet but with hints of white, pink, yellow and even purple.
The Orange strain have been colour-selected in flower for the orange shades. They are remarkably consistent within the strain name and all are grown and raised here. Strong, virus-free, flowering sized plants grown from flasked seedlings.
