Description

The entire wild range of this species in the world is a small area of the endemic-rich Troodos Mountains of Cyprus, where it was discovered by Lady Loch.

In view of its rarity in the wild, it is perhaps worth saying that ours are nursery propagated. Slender spikes of up to five, 2.5 cm flowers, early in the year. These are bright blue with an infusion of indigo and they are virtually all blue (i.e. they have only a small white eye whilst most of the other species have a large one).

These are pristine, top-sized, nursery-raised bulbs, but be warned – it naturally makes small bulbs. Despite its rarity, it is easily grown in a well drained soil in full sun.

Ours is the plant which came into horticulture from a German grower. Like almost every Chionodoxa that is currently being grown, there are several theories as to which name is correct for it. We don’t want to get too deeply involved in this, as most of it is nonsense. However there is a good chance that this lochiae isn’t lochiae to every botanical authority. It is however the plant you will get if you buy lochiae from a nursery! (and its a very nice Chionodoxa).
