Description
(Merendera montana, Merendera pyrenaicum)
Small bulbs make several very widely flaring, mid-sized flowers with white-centred, rounded rosy-lilac flowers on short stems, close to the ground, very early in the season. Very floriferous.
Can be grown out in the rockery or in a well-drained, sunny garden spot, or raised bed. It also does very well here, under alpine-glass, in a pot/pan. It likes to be cool in the autumn, to avoid premature elongation of the bases of the flowers, which can flop over when grown too warm.
A native of mountain pastures on and around Spain as far as the French Pyrenees. In the wild, the plant seems to have a fascinating relationship with mole-voles (link here)
