Description

Glaucous, glaucescent or plain green leaves and equally variable but lovely flowers. These are normally pale blue though it can (rarely) shade to white or palest yellow. All forms have a paler spur. In all of its colours and flower sizes, (for this too is variable) it is a very worthwhile dwarf species.

Hails from alpine areas of the Northern Caucasus around Nalchik and likes cool, moist, peaty conditions with transient shade in cultivation, but not too much or it elongates. Best in the garden but tolerant of pot cultivation, but protect it from bright sunshine which tends to overheat the tubers.

Very late flowering, usually into May.
