Description
Though I think of this as a Siberian species it is found across a wide region from the mountains of Korea to e. Russia and parts of Northern Japan also. In colour it ranges from (rare) white forms through to bright blues and deeper blues (some with infusions of violet) to almost dark purple-violet. The latter colour forms are about as rare as the white forms! All of the colours we have seen are are both attractive and lovely.
A very cold-tolerant species doing well in a humid, leafy spot in part- or transient-shade, where is makes a glorious display. Its soil preference seems to be for a humus-rich, slightly moisture retentive mix but one with good drainage. The slender growths appear early in the spring and flowering is equally early. In some summers, the plants will appear above ground in September.
Seed raised stock from Japanese horticulture.
