Description

(Crocus sieberi atticus Amfiklia CH.855)

The old subspecies of Crocus sieberi have now been revised and some have been elevated to species rank, thus as well as C. sieberi (found only on the high mountains of Crete) we now have Crocus atticus, nivalis and sublimis.

Years ago (in fact on May 20th 1987) we found a lovely, high altitude population of what is now called Crocus atticus scattered across alpine turf near the ski-resorts around Amfiklia in Phthiotis, Greece. Now, each spring the Crocus brings back memories of flower-filled, snow-melt meadows.

Strong-growing with bunched violet flowers, each with a yellow throat, made with the broad, silver-centred leaves.

Easy in almost any soil, best of all in a humus rich, sunny site.
