Description

(Crocus sieberi atticus Vardousia)

The old subspecies of Crocus sieberi have now been revised and elevated to species rank, thus as well as C. sieberi (found only on the high mountains of Crete) we now have Crocus atticus, nivalis and sublimis all as valid species.

This stock is raised from seed of the population found at Vardousia in the southernmost region of the Pindus mountains, west of Athens, in Greece. This is the seed strain from which Crocus atticus Stunner was cloned.

Garden tolerant bunches of superb, large, violet flowers with a deep yellow throat. This is the smallest of the C. atticus forms that we grow, but it is a total delight with its abundance of bunched flowers making up for any perceived shortfall in size.

Despite what you may read in the literature atticus is not always a plant of the lowlands as this strong, cold-tolerant stock demonstrates.
