Description

It is always nice to have enough to spare of this lovely, yet still scarce, October flowering species, from southern Greece and her Islands.

In autumn, each corm reliably makes a cluster of robust white goblets feathered and lined with varying amounts of purple on the exterior of the three outer petals. There is a small orange yellow throat and a style of the same orangey colour which contrast well with the white anthers which are found in this species.

A sunny garden spot with good drainage is excellent for this species which also does well in a pot of well-drained, loam-based compost under glass or in a bulb frame. With us this is an early species to flower and it is notably one of the first to die down and go dormant in Spring. When dormant it appreciates a dry rest over summer.

This stock is raised vegetatively and by hand-pollinated seed from a small collection made by a German botanist, originally from Greece, Mani, between Kardamyli and Prosilio, 290m.
