Description
(formerly Crocus vernus Uklin Strain)
In 2014 a wide geographical range of the Crocus vernus complex was studied. As a result there are some newly named species and the re-emergence of many old names, formerly and incorrectly lumped as synonyms under the very broad umbrella name of “Crocus vernus”. We now have the following species names :- heuffelianus, ilvensis, neapolitanus, neglectus, siculus and we still retain vernus as a valid name for some plants.
Originally found on the Uklin Pass of Ukraine, this is a seed-raised strain from seedlings of the original!
A classic dwarf, spring-flowering vernus with strong flowers in shades of pale to deep violet with an occasional white form and just a very few which are white marked with a dash of purple on the tips or on the petal reverse. Most plants, regardless of shade, have a darker mark at the top of the petals. Only a few colour forms are shown, the stock is very variable.
