Description

Commercial Crocus kotschyanus which you can buy in your local garden centre, is capable of making huge corms, but the plants are genetically damaged and they do not flower. I do not mean shy-flowering, I mean you get NO flowers at all just massive corms! We do not grow or offer those mass-produced Frankenstein monsters.

The strain that we grow has been brought on from seed and the corms will flower. They cost more to produce and so are more expensive but they have been selected for good, strong, clustered blooms. There is a slight variability but all have light violet flowers very early in the autumn season with contrasting darker veins and a bright orange-yellow throat-ring, composed of a double spot at the base of each petal, joined at their inner edges. White anthers and white styles complete the palette.

Easily grown in a sunny garden spot in a fertile, well-drained, loamy soil, or in an alpine house pot and one of the earliest of the autumnal species.

Raised from Jim Archibald seed which Jim sold under JJA.346.710, in turn this was catalogued as “No data – from several E. Pasche colls”
