Description
Large violet-purple flowers in October-November with a delicious and strong fragrance. One of the best of the autumn species and this form, from Malta (once named as var melitensis) is widely regarded as being the most fragrant of all of the forms.
It likes a well-drained, yet damp, garden spot. If you can offer overhead protection, from rain splash, with a shrub you will get pristine flowers.
This is a seed-raised strain (hand-pollinated seed) raised from selected plants which are traceable to seed collected at Clapham Junction (yes really!) in Malta. The yellow throat picks up beautifully on the yellow of the anthers and contrasting red-orange stigmas.
