Description

A stunning, rare species of the “saffron group”which is endemic to a small area of northern Jordan where its few habitats are threatened with obliteration as the outskirts of Amman encroach. It has good-sized flowers (not “small” as I have seen mentioned) of near white, intricately veined all over with well-contrasted, thin violet lines and contrasted with yellow anthers and very long bright red-orange, saffron-scented style branches, in Autumn.

In the wild this is said to inhabit semi-desert areas and certainly in cultivation it has some quite specific requirements. It needs exceedingly sharp drainage coupled with not too much water, keep it on the dry side with infrequent watering. It is most certainly NOT one for the garden in the UK, anywhere, ever and it will will also probably need to live its life in the alpine house or under glass with freedom from frost. Hot and dry in the summer. In truth, this is one for the specialist and not the novice grower.

From a stock first found many years ago at Madaba, Jordan, these are horticultural propagations and this is a slow process, so that this species is only ever likely to be available now and again and in small numbers when it is on offer.
