Description

A superb new discovery, one of many to have been found in Turkey within the past 15 years. In the wild this was both rare and limited in distribution and also heavily virused, however the plant has been “cleaned up” by raising from seed and cultivated stocks though rare, are clear of virus. The population has since been almost completely destroyed by wild boar.

Found by Neriman Ozhatay in the ruins of ancient Labranda in south western Turkey where it grows in open woodlands over limestone.

Flower colour varies from near white to pale violet (the plant shown is typical of those in our own stock) with the superb black anthers contrasting both with the petals anjd with the yellow throat. Flowering is in October as a rule.

Not difficult but this does require summer dryness, whilst indications are that it will tolerate rain in this period.

Introduced to our lists August 2018
