Description
(Crocus speciosus Aino)
With the current trend to naming variations in the genus Crocus as new species, the Crimean populations of what was thought to be Crocus speciosus have recently been re-classified as being significantly different, sufficiently so as to justify naming them as a new species. This new name is Crocus puringii, and the renaming is based on distribution and the distinct genotype of these Crimean populations.
Upright, silvery leaves and very large flowers with a white outer ground colour, striped and flushed with violet, the inner segments are deeper, blue-violet.
Very striking and for the gardener this has, in effect, the appearance of a much improvedand more colourful form of Crocus speciosus Oxonian, with a stronger tube and with much better resistance to autumn weather.
This stock is raised from plants originally found by Aino Pavel, Crimea near Yalta, mountain meadows at 1000 m. Awarded an AM (KAVB) 1999 (as Crocus speciosus Aino).
