Description

One of several newly described Iranian Crocus species, split from what was once thought to be a very variable and widespread species; Crocus biflorus. Now regarded as a loose alliance of distinct species; the Crocus biflorus group.

This has around 6-7 leaves, but can make up to 9, each 3 mm wide with a variable white stripe.

The flower tube is pale, usually with purple stripes, below flowers which vary from light violet to a darker, indigo shade. The outer petals are around 3 cm long and are usually striped with darker black-purple above a dark basal blotch. In some plants there is a yellowish, or biscuit coloured colouration on the exterior of the outer petals, under the striping. The inners are slightly paler and unstriped though they often display a dark basal blotch also. The throat is dark yellow, the 3-branched style is orange and is more or less the same length as the yellow anthers, perhaps just exceeding them.

Named for Dr. Reinhard Fritsch of Gatersleben, Germany, in recognition of his great contribution to the study of the Iranian flora, especially Allium. Known from only three localities in the mountains of northern Iran all within 18 km of each other, at altitudes of 1600 – 2400 m.

Crocus reinhardii has proven to be a good grower (so far only in pots) in a well-drained, loam-based compost with a dry summer rest. It flowers and sets seed well and increases nicely by division. It seems to be hardy.
