Description

A delightful and diminutive species from Mount Profit Elias on the island of Rhodes and apparently from nearby Symi (where blue forms are said to grow).

In the earliest days of January (with us) this makes starry white flowers, right down at ground level. These have a white ground, stained cream on the outside of the outermost 3 petals, feathered and lined with deep violet-black across the cream. Inside the flower there is a small, deep gold throat, an orange style and black anthers which dehisce to yield yellow pollen.

Clearly a relative of C. biflorus but very distinct on floral characters and delightfully easy to grow in a well-drained, loam-based compost – we grow it under alpine glass to be sure of pulling it through, its hardiness is untested but this should not be taken to mean that it isn’t hardy, or to start rumours on internet gossip boards, we are simply being cautious with a new and untried plant.

Introduced to our lists 2019.
