Description

This is an uncommon species in the wild scattered across four of the Balearic Islands with a few localities known in France. It prefers scrubby woodland and is usually associated with evergreen Oaks. A lover of shade and humidity disliking strong sunlight or high temperatures.

It has deep blue-green, leaves which are silver-clouded and spotted with scattered silvering on the top. The underside of the leaves is red-purple. The flowers are pure white, sometimes with a very faint veining which is at most a subtle shade or two different from the white. They bear a sweet, light fragrance and are produced in spring, during March and April.

It is a species for pot culture in the UK as it will not take more than a slight frost but it is perhaps hardy in very favoured spots and further south than the UK. A well drained, leafy compost seems best and something based largely on river sand and deciduous leaf-mould seems ideal, with the corm planted 4-5cm deep. We find this the slowest-growing of all of the Cyclamen species and consequently the corms are always and consistently, much smaller than the other species.
