Description

(gigantea x royleana)

This unites two superb species. The American Epipactis gigantea is one of the most vigorous of the genus, with good-sized flowers in a sunset blend of red, yellow and orange, shaded with brown and a touch of white.

Epipactis royleana is from the Himalayas and has an almost uniformly deep, dark red flower which, in some forms, approaches the colour of Epipactis atrorubens. However royleana is a creeping species which grows in damp ground and so emulates the habitat of its American cousin.

This hybrid, though variable is like a more vigorous, intensely coloured, reddish gigantea which revels in similar conditions. Vigorous and it will soon make a good-sized plant.

Introduced to our lists in November 2011.
