Description
(gigantea x veratrifolia).
One parent, Epipactis gigantea is a vigorous, large, North American plant with a flower colour in shades of russets, reds and yellow.
The other parent, Epipactis veratrifolia is massive and strong growing species occurring rarely in wet flushes in the mountains of Cyprus. The petals are green with a heavy overlay of claret at the base, whilst the lip is a complex mix of raspberry red, orange and white. This mixes well with the browns, reds and oranges of gigantea to give a well-coloured flower.
The parents are vigorous, and although veratrifolia is huge, this hybrid trumps both parents with spectacular stems that can reach 1m tall (usually a little less) and large flowers.
It reaches its largest size in a damp to wet spot in full sun. Ours are near the overflow from a small pond and are in transiently wet soil but one that that dries out now and again. However this is very tolerant as a garden plant and if you want a trouble-free, specimen Epipactis to grow out in the garden, then this is the one to go for. I would even say it is worth trying in the herbaceous border as it is so vigorous.
