Description

(Marsh Helleborine)

Slowly creeping growths give rise to short stems, clothed with small leaves and topped, in July, with a spike of lovely flowers. These have red-infused, brownish sepals around an intricate white and yellow lip. The overall effect is entrancing.

This species likes full sun in a seasonally wet or damp soil, for preference, this should be limey. We have it outside in very infertile mix based on coco-peat (ground coconut coir) limestone chippings, limestone gravel and coral sand.  Its site in the garden is near a seep of water.

These are strong, flowering-sized divisions of a cultivated stock which apparently originated in central Europe, many years ago. The clone is a vigorous one and more substantial and robust than any I have yet seen. Having said this, the rhizomes are still thinner and less “chunky” than, for example, E.gigantea, with which you might be more familiar. This is just the way they are.
