Description
This is a vigorous terrestrial orchid from Japan and the colder parts of north-eastern Asia. It thrives in moist soil in light shade, or morning sun.
The flowers appear in summer and are very showy in shades of yellow, orange-yellow and tangerine on 60 cm tall plants. Each bloom has an intricate pattern in shades of pink, and lurid pink and orange marks on the lip.
In the garden it likes a moist to damp soil and makes a very good stream-side plant. It may need more than one attempt to establish, as sometimes, for no good reason, a perfectly healthy plant can fail. Most of the time, things are fine but do please be aware of the slight possibility if you choose to buy this species. Once established, then it becomes easy, and you wonder how initial failures could ever have happened. Eventually it will form large colonies, by natural increase and when settled. Beautiful and worth any effort.
