Description

(syn. Aurantiaca, Copenhagen Orange, Schlyters Orange )

A lovely form in which the normally acid-lemon flowers are instead distinctly orangey. The shade is difficult to portray accurately but is clearly distinct from the type. Please do not expect tangerine flowers – the colour difference is subtle, you really need both forms side by side to realise there is a difference.

The original plant was discovered around 1950 by Jens Ole Pedersen in the Bikely nursery at Holbæk (Denmark). Originally this plant was named Eranthis hyemalis Aurantiaca, but the name was apparently never registered .  Richard Blakeway-Philips in the UK was the first to mention this form as Orange Glow in 1989 and it was registered, in 2009, by Cees Breed with the KAVB. In our eyes, there is not the slightest discernible difference between Orange Glow and the form know as Schlyters Orange from Sweden which was named subsequently. They appear to be just two names for one clone.

Wim Boens has spent considerable time researching the genus and has provided a lot of really useful and well-researched information in the Scottish Rock Garden journal. The full text is linked here.

Rare, seldom heard about and even more rarely seen. This stock has been vegetatively propagated from a few tubers, sent to us many years ago from Denmark. We have a few only and the price is indeed ‘each’ and not per 10!
