Description

Quite a new species as it was only found, on Mount Hebo in Oregon, at the end of the 20th Century.

This is superb and very conspicuous so that how it could have escaped notice for so long is a mystery especially as it is considered by many to be the doyen of Erythronium.

It is slow from seed and makes virtually no offsets here but it is readily grown and it bears very large white flowers with a central yellow zone and yellow anthers in March and April. When the plant is mature, there are usually several of the large flowers spaced along a tall stout stem.

This is perhaps related to the sumptuous (but almost ungrowable) Erythronium montanum however Erythronium elegans is very happy in the garden, in conditions of light shade and cool humidity, with good drainage. It will take sunshine and drier conditions, but may be a little smaller in stature under these conditions.

It has one foible, it does not like to be out of the ground for long, so these are sent out when ready for immediate planting by yourself. We lift, despatch at once and then replant our stock. The plant is then in stock for a short time only before being withdrawn from sale so please order this early if you want to grow it.

Seed-raised in the UK from parents which were themselves raised from seed in the UK.
